Nice try though.”Ĭortana closed her eyes, then opened them again a moment later. Running memory error check… Partition detected? How is there a data partition on my chip?”Ĭortana was suddenly right in front of John, glaring at him. “That’s exactly what the last fragment said. “Wait- I’m not a fragment!” John said quickly.Ĭortana raised an eyebrow. “You rampancy fragments are getting more and more frustrating.” Cortana sighed. When nothing happened, Cortana looked at John again. A different Cortana, seated in the air above the hologram emitter in the center of the room. Yeah, right there was the cryotube, with the Master Chief inside, and-Ĭortana was looking at him, her expression frustrated. This was the starting room on the Forward Unto Dawn. She crossed her arms over her chest as, much like her own change, the world reappeared pixel by pixel, forming a room that she recognized. “Let me guess- this is the part where, aaaand there we go.” John said, the world blurring away. Guess it could be worse- could have been the low poly version from Combat Evolved.” John said. And pixel by pixel it became clearer, becoming a female figure that perfectly matched the face, a body adorned with lines and markings that, like the lines of computer code, hearkened to her digital nature. John didn’t have much time to react as his clothing and chest blurred, the effect spreading to his limbs a moment later. The new face that snapped into focus was a familiar one, faint trails of computer code over the skin like raindrops. His face blurred, then started to become more clear, like a computer render going from pixelated and basic to refined and complete. A glow that seemed to… follow his motions. A blue colored glow reflected in the screen. He reached for the second controller- he could solve that later. Had it just electrocuted him? He hadn’t changed the batteries in quite a while so it was probably possible. The controller clattered to the floor as he felt something course through his hand. She was literally a digital construct after all. Heck, the closest thing that Halo had to Miranda was probably Chief’s AI, and there was no way she’d ever have to worry about getting injured during a mission. Not having to feel enemy gun fire whoosh past over head, or get patched up after a mission when things didn’t go well. It was going to be nice to have the added distance- the disconnect of only playing a game rather than holding a weapon. Not a perfect game but darn it, he enjoyed it. The chlorine in there wouldn’t do him any favors but he could get purified water later. John started up his old Xbox and loaded up Halo 4, holding the controller in one hand as he got himself a glass of water. Something that didn’t involve him trying to be an executive officer or a Cerberus agent or struggling to figure out how to put on an overly snug futuristic jumpsuit. No, for now, he just needed something simple. Probably understandable that he didn’t feel like another play through quite yet. Chakwas had tried her best but she’d died right there. Right through the abdomen, pinned to the floor. And as a result the first hit they’d taken from Collector drones, Miranda had been impaled by debris. Despite her insistence, Shepherd had never bothered to upgrade the armor on the Normandy. Miranda hadn’t ever made it into the actual Collector base. Maybe going for another run of Mass Effect? John wondered what Jay and Ethan were doing. He also could see about a hundred different ways his apartment could be rearranged to be more efficient. Not like he had a figure to look after any more, but still. He’d never worried too much about calories before- but now, after being Miranda Lawson, he could name every single way that the soft drink was bad for him. John sighed, staring at the soda bottle in his hand.
